There is so much information online these days. I feel overwhelmed sometimes (ok, most of the time). As a blogger, you can end up suffering from information overload. There is alot of information on the internet (you don’t say?!). Digital clutter is a very serious issue.
Similar to any clutter that you might have in your home, it can cause chaos in your mind and in your life. The Internet is like one big gigantic rabbit hole. Sometimes you can fall in and it can be a real challenge to get out! If you are not careful, this rabbit hole can waste away your most productive hours. I am speaking from my own experience.
Distractions are everywhere you look on the Internet. The information overload is out of this world. Think about the times you spend scrolling through Facebook, Instagram and other social media sites. You could be spending your time doing other more productive things! I am just as guilty of wasting time surfing through social media as anyone else.
Keeping up with people online hasn’t really led me to be where I want to be in my life, I prefer to put my focus on other things. In 10 simple and practical productivity tips for a better life I go into more detail on the things you can do to be more productive and stop wasting time.
My goal in life is to produce value. I want to consume less and produce more value. Outside of the usual social media sites (Instagram, Facebook anyone?), there are so many other distractions. I sometimes struggle with how to shut everything off and just concentrate!

You are probably wondering..
Have you ever wanted to do some work, only to find out that the Internet has hijacked your time? I will put my hand up and say that I have been there, done that. You start off with the best intentions,- saying to yourself: Today, I am going to give 100% focus and finish writing 4 posts for my blog. No excuses or distractions. Fast forward a few hours and you have barely done anything. You start to realize that the day is almost over! Where did the time go? The sad truth is, you probably gave away your time to other parts of the internet.
Even the strongest people can be lured into online distractions. There is a rabbit hole everywhere you look on the Internet! Sometimes it’s a YouTube video, other times it’s an online shopping site. It could be an email list, Instagram etc. Don’t get me wrong, having choices is a good thing. If you want to use your time better, you can not fall for the many online distractions.
Anytime I have clutter in my house, my sense of calm suffers. Clutter affects my mood and I notice that I get anxiety anytime my house is a mess. Online clutter can do the same thing. Don’t believe me? Go to your email account right now and see how many emails you have! Having lots of emails in your inbox can leave you feeling overwhelmed. In my email account, I can see emails from shopping sites, newsletters, webinar sign ups etc. Most of them are not even open! The struggle to clean up my e-mail inbox is very REAL.

Unsubscribe from e-mail lists:
This includes shopping sites, outdated e-mail lists etc. I need to unsubscribe from newsletter that offer no value and only try to sell to me every time. Online shopping sites that I rarely shop at keep sending me emails. Thank goodness Gmail now organizes salesy (yup, that’s a word) emails for you in a different tab! If it wasn’t for Gmail putting emails into different sections, I would have around 40,000+ emails to sort through!
Stop signing up for webinars
I am enrolled in a blogging course right now. Inside my e-mail inbox, there are countless invites for webinars (from email lists I signed up for, silly me). Attending every webinar that I get invited to is not even an option. It’s sad to say, but most webinars nowadays offer little to no value. There have been countless times where I have been lured by a promising webinar.- Only to find out that no value was offered, only fluff. An overpriced course is oftentimes offered.
There is nothing wrong with people selling courses online. The issue I have is that many of those people do not try to offer anything useful to start. Instead, all they do is sell. You walk away with very little in the end. However, they still want your money! Nope. Thank you. I will pass.
Find a rehab facility for web browser tabaholics
I am a bonafide Firefox tabaholic. There are atleast 8-10 tabs open anytime I am working online. This habit not only takes up my internet bandwidth ,it is really distracting. Having multiple tabs open messes with my concentration levels. If anybody has found a cure for this (or vaccine), please let me know. I have literally tried everything!
Feeling overwhelmed as a blogger can really set you back. It is something that I deal with regularly. If you want to get stuff done online, it is important to be aware of all the clutter.

Remember, not every piece of information on the Internet must be consumed! You can only take part in so many course, webinars, emails, blogs etc. before you have to finally take action. Information overload is real. It can take you away from your goals and leave you in the planning stages forever. Do not let that be your reality.
Trim the fat, get started and learn as you go. Create a plan of action for yourself by setting goals, timelines and working on your focus. I plan to do the same. Success is a series of regular actions and habits. Your habits will decide if you succeed or fail with anything that you do in life.
